A prominent Ontario, Canada painter and draftsman, Bewabon Shilling was born in Orillia, Ontario and currently divides his time between Rama, Ontario and Toronto. His works have been exhibited at Roberts Gallery,* Toronto for almost a decade and he has been the subject of a solo exhibition at the MacLaren Art Centre, Barrie, Ontario (November 30, 2019 – March 2, 2020).

His primary medium is oil paint on canvas; however, the Orillia Museum of Art and History (see sources for link) has photographs of several installation projects created by Shilling. His painting subjects include still life, landscapes, figures, interiors and self portraits. His most popular painting styles could be described as Expressionism* and Fauvism*; some of his other works could be described as Abstraction* and Color Field Painting*. Bewabon Shilling (b.1977)

A prominent Ontario, Canada painter and draftsman, Bewabon Shilling was born in Orillia, Ontario and currently divides his time between Rama, Ontario and Toronto. His works have been exhibited at Roberts Gallery,* Toronto for almost a decade and he has been the subject of a solo exhibition at the MacLaren Art Centre, Barrie, Ontario (November 30, 2019 – March 2, 2020).

His art education includes one year of graphic design at George Brown College, Toronto (1997); the Ontario College of Art and Design*, Florence, Italy Off-Campus Studies Program (1999); and graduation (diploma) from the Ontario College of Art and Design*, Toronto (2001).

Shilling’s works were exhibited at the MacLaren Art Centre, Barrie, Ontario in “In Name Only, the Paintings of Bewabon & Travis Shilling” (2005); and, currently [February 2020], in the solo exhibition “Bewabon Shilling: Between the Forest and the Sky” from November 30, 2019 to March 2, 2020. (1)

His works were also included in exhibitions at the Orillia Museum of Art and History, Orillia, Ontario (2007) and at the Armory Show, New York City (2011); and, they were featured in solo and group exhibitions at prominent commercial galleries such as Roberts Gallery, Toronto; Muskoka Gateway Gallery, Gravenhurst, Ontario; Shilling Gallery, Rama; Lee Contemporary Art, Orillia; Kensington Fine Art, Calgary; Collectors Gallery, Calgary; Darrell Bell Gallery, Saskatoon; Gary Farmer Gallery of Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico; and, Webpuccino Gallery, Florence, Italy.

As noted above, several photographs by Shilling of his installation projects are in the permanent collection of the Orillia Museum of Art and History, Orillia, Ontario.

His awards and honors include a Norman & Margaret Jewison Charitable Foundation Scholarship (2000). (2)

(2) Researchers please note: Most of our sources list two scholarship awards for Shilling: The Norman & Margaret Jewison Charitable Foundation Scholarship (2000), which supports First Nations culture; and, the Rose of Cedarvale Scholarship (2000). We found plenty of online information and references about the Jewison award, it is even briefly discussed in the Canadian Encyclopedia; however, other than Bewabon Shilling biographies, we could find no other online references or information about the Rose of Cedarvale Scholarship. – M.D. Silverbrooke
